Technical Profile- How To Determine Which Type of Cleaner To Use

Phase III's Top Product, Oil Sponge AB / AB+,  And How They                    Outperform Other Products - Part I and Part II

This is a multi-part article discussing the performance, benefits and savings customers experience when using Oil Sponge. Every month we will discuss absorbent products benefits and drawbacks. It is not meant to beat up on the competition, but to stimulate the mind into investigating and evaluating current MRO practices relating to absorbents.

OIL SPONGE OUTPERFORMING OTHER ABSORBENTS -  PART I - COST

With so many absorbents on the market today it is difficult to determine which one is best for your needs. There are so many factors to consider when buying an absorbent, such as the BIG TWO... Cost and Efficiency.

Let's take a look at cost first. Cost is relative to the spill regardless if it it big or small it's going to take some amount of absorbent to clean it up. Most people look at the cost of the bag of absorbent and say, "This costs less than that product, so I'll buy the less expensive one," which is true to a point. What you really need to look at is the cost of the spill. Your low cost absorbent may cost less, but you may be using substantially more bags than the more "expensive" absorbent.

For example, based on independent testing and using conventional motor oil, it took 8 times more clay absorbent to absorb what one bag of Oil Sponge would absorb. Simple math applies here; if clay costs $6.00 /bag vs. $25.00 /bag of Oil Sponge, then $6.00 X 8 = $48.00. $25.00 vs. $48.00, clay did not cost less, it cost more. The fact is, you purchased the lesser expensive product based on perceived value, not real value.

Part II - EFFICIENCY is discussed further in this edition.

Phase III's Top Product, Oil Sponge AB / AB+, and How They
Outperform Other Products (continued)  PART II - Efficiency

Efficiency is the next important issue, since labor is usually a fixed cost in most MRO facilities, time on
spill is critical as time = money. Since the average shop spill involves some sort of inflammable oil or
or fuel, time is of the essence. Hazardous spills are also the number one reason why work stations
shut down, essentially putting a kink in your income generating system.

Oil Sponge has several unique properties that allow MRO personnel to quickly respond and recover
a spill. The most important is its unique composition of renewable organic fibers. Unlike clay or
other hard granular products, which use their surface area to simply adsorb, Oil Sponge wicks the
spill completely through the entire fiber particle, this is called absorption or absorbing.  Think of it
like absorbing water with a cotton towel or marbles, which is going to work better?

The high efficiency of Oil Sponge allows less time on spill, more square feet generating income, a
safer work place from slip and fall injuries and less product disposal cost. This all adds up to
saving time and money for your company. What more could you ask for! Visit www.oilsponge.com
for more information.  Watch for Part III - Remedial Effects in the September edition.

TECHNICAL PROFILE
How To Determine Which Type of Cleaner To Use

Many factors are involved in determining which type of cleaner to use. Factors   will involve the economy of usage, current in-place process, safety issues, toxicity, sensitivity, VOC constraints, substrate integrity, etc. and overall efficacy.

Water-Based products are usually the most cost-effective cleaner and depending on the detergents, chelators and pH adjustment, have the ability to remove many soils. The dilution capability gives these cleaners a wide range of efficacy, cost adjustment and often, allows for lesser inventory of cleaners for broad spectrum cleaning.

Solvent
cleaners are used for tough, water-resistant soils and can be very specific as to what they claim. Solvents are the only cleaners that can have high-dielectric (property where electricity is not carried) and can be used while an electric motor is kept running thus saving down-time and preventing shorts after a cleaned motor is restarted. Solvents when used for cleaning raw metals, may even leave a protective film on the surface preventing flash-rusting.

Emulsions
are often the best choice as they have a broader soil-removing parameter than water-based or solvent cleaners. This is due to an emulsions inherent make-up; a combination of both water and solvent. Emulsions may also accept a wider range of secondary and tertiary cleaning aids/intermediates, as well as, providing a base that allows pH (corrosive) property to be used in conjunction with solvents.  Visit www.oilsponge.com for more information.
